Speedrun tips for faster runs in Search For The Needle

Look at what interrupts your current run before buying the next upgrade. Check whether you are spending the time collecting, returning to sell, or waiting for a tool. Make one change that addresses the delay, try it with your current equipment, and check the part of the run it was meant to improve.

Use the tools and helpers you already have. Once you have the chapter's target, move on to its remaining tasks instead of continuing to collect for another maxed upgrade.

Find what is taking up the time

Watch a collection and selling cycle. Notice whether most of it goes into gathering hay, walking back to sell, or waiting for a tool to work again. Also check whether a helper you own is actually equipped or deployed.

Hand collection takes most of the cycle.Hand Speed, Grasp, or Hold, depending on the problem.Collection becomes quicker, each action takes more hay, or you can hold to collect.
You keep filling the bag and returning to sell.Upgrade Bag and the route between your work area and the selling point. You can carry more and make fewer trips for the same amount of hay.
The Vacuum keeps overheating.Cooling, Runtime, and what you can do while it cools. The tool becomes available again and less of the cycle goes into waiting.

On PC, press Tab to open the tool upgrade menu and select the tool you are using. Read the current menu cost before committing your Cash. Buying several upgrades at once makes it harder to see which one changed the problem.

When you are still collecting by hand

If each collection action is slow, look at Hand Speed. If each action takes too little hay, look at Grasp. After buying an upgrade, collect with the Hand and watch the bag count to check the change.

Hold helps when repeated clicking is the problem. It lets you keep collecting by holding the collection input. It does not increase bag capacity, so a bag that fills quickly still needs a capacity decision. Hand Speed affects collection rather than making your character walk faster.

Collect rainbow hay when it is nearby, since it sells for more. If there is none in your current work area, continue with ordinary hay. Spending time walking around the entire pile hoping to find another colored piece interrupts the income you need for an upgrade.

When you have enough Cash for a tool in the current shop, compare that purchase with the Hand upgrade you were considering. A Pitchfork can remove several pieces in one action. You do not have to finish every Hand upgrade before considering it. If the basic collecting and selling cycle is still unclear, use the beginner guide before trying to shorten it.

When you already have collecting tools

After a Pitchfork or another tool improves collection, check whether the bag has become the main interruption. If you are taking a few actions and then returning to sell again, inspect Upgrade Bag. In Farmhouse, the shop is inside the barn. Check capacity before spending more on the amount collected per action.

Watch the capacity shown by the bag after upgrading it, then collect with the same tool. The useful change is being able to gather more before returning to sell. A larger bag may take longer to fill, so fill time alone can make an upgrade look worse even when it has reduced your trips.

Choose a work area with an easy route back to the selling point. In Farmhouse, this is the cow's Feed window at the barn. Return to that area after selling and check the new hay you expose.

For a Pitchfork, check the current Cooldown and Sweep options against what you are doing. If you are waiting between actions, inspect Cooldown. If you want each action to collect more, inspect Sweep, then see whether your bag can accommodate the larger loads.

Keep collection going during tool pauses

Watch the Vacuum's heat while you use it. If it frequently reaches overheat, inspect Cooling and Runtime before putting all your next purchases into Power. More hay in a burst can still leave you spending much of the following cycle waiting.

Let the Vacuum cool when necessary. While it is unavailable, sell the hay you have or use another collecting tool you already own. Look for the heat to fall and check that the Vacuum can collect again before returning to it.

If you have Dynamite and another tool, use the blast on your work area, then collect with the Pitchfork or Vacuum during its cooldown. Check the area the blast exposed as you switch. Continue searching for the real target rather than treating each blast as a reason to stop looking at the pile.

Check the classes and helpers you already own

Before entering another run, check your selected class and read its effect card. A preview or a class you own is not proof that it is the one currently selected. Choose using the effect on that card and the tool or bag you are using. Start with your current class and equipment before spending more Gems on rolls.

For example, if the selected card improves carrying, check your bag capacity in the run. If it changes selling value, check the relevant sale. If it helps a particular tool, make sure that is the tool you are using.

Equip an owned pet before starting and check its behavior once you reach the hay. If you have a Drone, make sure it is deployed and working instead of still sitting in your inventory. Watching it collect and carry a load is more useful than relying on the shop's owned label.

When considering a helper you do not own, read its current cost and currency. If it costs Gems, compare that expense with your other Gems plans. Keep it separate from the Cash budget for tools and bag upgrades.

If you already own permanent unlocks

At the start of a run, check which tools are actually available and use the ones you already have. Permanent Pitchfork, Dynamite, and Drone unlocks are for having those tools available in each run. Check the current upgrade panel as well; a permanent tool unlock does not mean that every upgrade is already maxed.

Use your Cash where the available tool now needs help. If collection is quick but the ordinary bag fills repeatedly, look at capacity. If the Vacuum's heat causes pauses, look at its current cooling and runtime.

With an Infinite Bag, you can collect beyond an ordinary bag limit, but you still sell hay to earn Cash for upgrades. Choose a selling break when you need that Cash or while another tool is cooling. The larger carrying allowance does not stop a Vacuum from overheating.

Stop farming when the chapter needs the next action

In Farmhouse, once the game confirms that you found the Needle, equip it and use Give with the Farmer. Continue his dialogue and chapter ending instead of waiting to finish another tool upgrade. The Farmhouse walkthrough covers that handoff and ending.

In Basement, finding the Basement Key ends the key search, but you still need the puzzles done to clear the exit. If the puzzles are finished, equip the key and leave. If they are not, move to the remaining puzzles. Use the Basement walkthrough for the exit dependencies.

In Ranch, after the Golem is defeated and the car key appears, take the key, sit in the driver's seat, and follow the route arrows. Continue to the departure cutscene. The Ranch walkthrough covers the repair and escape chain; collecting extra Cash after the key appears does not advance that exit.

Keep checking exposed objects during collection as well. A fast tool can uncover a target that you overlook while concentrating on upgrades. If you are unsure whether you picked up a Gem or the Needle, use the Needle guide to check the target and handoff.

Check whether the change helped

Compare the same part of your next cycle with the previous one: collection per action, usable time before a heat pause, or trips to sell. If the original interruption is reduced, look for what now takes the most time before choosing another purchase.

For whole-run comparisons, keep the chapter, difficulty, and party size consistent and account for class, pet, tools, upgrades, and device. An Infinite Bag changes the carrying stops. A tutorial that cuts between purchases can also leave out the wait for Cash.

The Needle can appear at different points in a search. A late find does not by itself show that your bag or collection upgrade failed.

FAQ

Is there a hay-clearing route I can try?

One October 2, 2026 suggestion was to start at the bottom edge, work along the sides, then the front and back, without digging too deeply in one place. Try it with your equipment while checking exposed objects. Use it as a route to test, with the Needle's changing location in mind.

Compare collection and upgrade choices.

Is rainbow hay worth collecting?

Rainbow hay can sell for more Cash than ordinary hay. Collect it when you can reach it without losing track of the area you are searching. Keep inspecting newly exposed space for the chapter's target; a valuable load alone does not finish the objective.

Balance selling and searching.

Which upgrade should I buy next?

Watch one trip from collecting hay to selling it. If gathering is slow, inspect the upgrades for the tool you use. If you keep filling the bag and returning to sell, inspect its capacity. If the Vacuum spends too much time overheated, look at Cooling and Runtime. Compare the current cost with your Cash, buy one useful improvement, and see whether that interruption is reduced.
