In Normal Farmhouse, clear hay from an area you can return to easily and check each patch you uncover. The Needle spawns randomly, so another player's digging spot is not a fixed route to yours. Keep the collection and Feed loop working while you search.
When the game says YOU FOUND THE NEEDLE! and tells you to equip it, stop looking through the pile. Equip the Needle, return to the Farmer, and use Give. His acknowledgement completes the search and handoff.
Work through an area you can revisit
Choose a reachable face of the haystack with a route back to the cow at the barn window. Work from that area long enough to expose more of the hay behind it. Returning to a familiar patch after each sale makes it easier to see what you have just uncovered.
You can work inward from one side without following an exact direction or digging a particular shape. As the patch opens, aim at the next reachable hay. Choose that area for easy access and a clear view of the hay you expose.
On PC, aim at hay and use the left mouse button to collect it. Watch whether hay enters your bag. Once the nearby patch is cleared, move your aim to hay that remains instead of repeating the action over the same empty space.
When your bag fills, go to the Feed cow and sell the load. Return to the area you were working on with room to collect again. Keep a rough sense of where the previous load came from so you can inspect that patch before making the next one larger.
Check what each round of collection uncovered
Pause your collection when you have opened a new patch and look over it. Check the exposed surface and any ground you can now see. Then choose the next remaining hay to collect. This is a search routine you can repeat; it does not depend on reaching the center or clearing a set amount first.
Look at the work area before leaving to sell. A newly exposed object is easier to examine while you still remember which hay covered it. On your return, check that area again before starting on another patch.
If part of the cleared area is difficult to see from where you are standing, move to a position with a clearer view. Check around the edge of the patch and the ground already exposed by your tools.
You can uncover the Needle while much of the haystack remains. If you notice a possible target, stop expanding the hole long enough to examine it. There is no need to leave a visible target behind while you finish an upgrade or clean up unrelated hay.
Tell a Gem pickup from the Needle
Rainbow hay can help your income, and Gems can appear as you dig. Collect them when they are nearby, then check what changed. A Gem adds to your Gems balance. Rainbow hay is collected as hay and sells for more. Neither pickup alone confirms that you have obtained the Farmer's Needle.
Do not identify the target solely by a flash, a bright spot, or the color of something in the pile. Move close to an exposed object that you think is the Needle and pick it up using the game's item interaction. Check the response after taking it.
The message YOU FOUND THE NEEDLE!, followed by the instruction to equip it and take it to the Farmer, is the signal to change tasks. Stop scanning the remaining hay for another target and equip the Needle.
| What changed? | What it tells you | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Hay is entering your bag. | Collection is working. | Inspect the patch you expose and keep searching. |
| Your Gems balance increases after a pickup. | You collected a Gem. | Continue looking for the Needle unless you also have the Needle-found message. |
| The game announces that you found the Needle and tells you to equip it. | The game has confirmed the Needle. | Equip the Needle and take it to the Farmer. |
| The Farmer acknowledges the Needle after Give. | He has accepted the handoff. | Continue with his dialogue instead of returning to the pile. |
If you went to the Farmer after seeing a shiny object, first check whether you have the Needle. If you do, equip it and use Give. If you only collected a Gem or left the object behind, return to the area you opened and resume looking.
When the pile looks almost empty
Check the ground and cleared work area before deciding that the Needle is missing. A small object can be easy to pass over while concentrating on the next piece of hay. Look back over areas you have exposed, including the edges where a thin patch of hay remains.
Change your viewing position if needed and check the remaining patches individually. Collect reachable hay that still covers an area, then inspect what it reveals. Avoid using the whole pile's size as a substitute for examining these smaller areas.
Before clearing more, check whether the game has already announced that you found the Needle. If it has, equip the item and take it to the Farmer.
Check what has stopped the search
If hay stops entering your bag, inspect the bag limit first. A full bag means that you need to Feed the cow before collecting more. Keep this separate from whether you have found the Needle: the bag limit can interrupt an otherwise working search.
If the bag has room, check the tool you are using. An overheated Vacuum needs time to cool. Dynamite has a cooldown after a blast. Use another tool you already own while waiting, or sell hay during the break, then return to the exposed area and resume checking it.
With room in the bag and a tool available, check your aim. You may be repeating the collection action on a patch you have already cleared. Choose nearby hay that remains within reach and watch for the bag count to increase. A pile that looks similar from a distance can still have a working collection area.
When repeated sales are interrupting your search, inspect Upgrade Bag in the barn. When collection is slow, inspect the upgrades for the tool you use. Use the current menu price to decide whether you can afford that improvement. Keep searching with the tools you have.
There is no fixed number of loads or minutes that you must complete before the Needle can be found. Do not use a tutorial's length to decide that your run has failed. Keep checking whether you can collect, whether each new area has been inspected, and whether the game has already confirmed the target.
If you need help with collecting, Feed, or choosing your first upgrades, use the beginner guide.
Equip the Needle and use Give
Equip the Needle after the Found message appears. Before you approach the Farmer, check which item you are holding. If you still have a collection tool out, switch to the Needle.
At the Farmer, use Give to hand him the Needle. Feed at the cow's window sells hay during the search. Watch for him to acknowledge that you found it.
If he has not acknowledged the target, check that you really obtained the Needle, equipped it, and used Give with him. If he has already begun talking about the next part of the job, the search and handoff are done. Follow that dialogue and use the Farmhouse walkthrough for the chapter ending.
